Writer's Block Party

The past few weeks have been pretty damn stressful for me. I have to admit, a fair amount of it is of my own doing: after all if I didn't care about having a constant flow of work, life would be so much easier. This is the bane of ambition - it doesn't really allow you to sit around waiting for the world to hand you everything on a silver platter.

As most of you probably know, writing involves a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Speaking of tears, someone in Ireland has found a way to bottle them, like in the picture above. It's supposed to produce a light, sweet whiskey that's good for partaking of when reading over your editor's notes. I can't order it since I live in Utah where home alcohol deliveries aren't allowed, otherwise one would be getting a prominent spot in my office. If you want to get some, by all means follow this link

To blow off some steam, partly because of my inability to get writer's tears, I'm jamming out to Writer's Block Party. Listen to the music and feel the inspiration flow through your fingers and onto the keyboard:

Writing Honestly

Long ago when I first set out to write and publish a book, I read through Stephen King's On Writing. I know a lot of writers pour through the pages of that book, just like I did, gleaning knowledge from the pages. While at the time I thought I was following the advice printed there, the reality is I violated one of the foundation rules King gives: to never lie in your writing.

Some Days the Bear Eats You

There's an old saying that some days you eat the bear, and then some days the bear eats you. I used to think it was a stupid saying when I was younger, but the longer I'm around, the more I can see the wisdom in it.

Daring to be Different

I made and then shared the above picture/quote on my Facebook author page not too long ago. I've carried the quote with me for a long, long time. Before I was officially a writer I always felt different from others, and for some periods of my life I resented that. As I've grown and matured, I've learned that being willing to risk the unusual is a tremendous gift.

This Is Why I Write

Sometimes writing can be incredibly frustrating. You can feel cut off from everyone else, and sometimes you question if the thing you're slaving away on will be read by anyone. It's a pathway filled with uncertainty, one that only the strong will survive.

Not Knowing When to Quit

Just a little bit ago I was ran into a great article written by Barbara Corcoran of the television show Shark Tank. She's a smart, driven person who knows a lot about business. Like it or not, writing is a business activity, even if it's more creative than accounting (depending which company we're talking about).

I'm a Writer, Not a Communications Specialist

Many years ago I was a new, self-employed writer. Work came in starts and fits, which made budgeting for things a practice in acrobatics. My confidence wasn't really there, and thinking back it probably showed in a lot of things that I did. One of the biggest signs of my shakiness was the fact that I had business cards made up that said I was a "writer/communications specialist."
